An "eggcellent" experiment
In the "Eggy lab", we tested different beverages to see which would be best for consumption. Before the experiment, we weighed eggs and discovered the changes our egg (the metaphor for a cell) after being immersed within various substances over the course of two days. We soon discovered that the egg's weight, height, and width had changed after being soaked in all of the solutions. When it came time to conclude our findings, we had to state which substance was best for the egg and therefore us. After our lesson on osmosis and diffusion, we concurred that the less change occurring in the egg, the better. We then concluded that the best "pre-workout" drink was chocolate milk; as the egg was exposed to the smallest amount of changes while being soaked within this substance. In an ideal solution, a cell is isotonic, meaning there are equal amounts of solute and solvent within and surrounding the cell. When exposed to various substances, our metaphoric cell grew, shifting from this isotonic shape into a hypertonic egg. When exposed to the various substances the egg became hypertonic (hypertonic referring to the now increased amount of water in the egg) as water rushed within it to equalize the amounts of solute. Despite all of the beverages creating this hypertonic egg, the chocolate milk kept our "cell" closest to an isotonic state; proving itself to be the superior substance in benefiting the cell and our bodies.
